APS Health policies

preventing illness

  • Practice good hand washing habits.
  • Cough and sneeze in your elbow.
  • Keep your hands away from your face.
  • Do not share food, drink, or eating utensils with each other.
  • Stay at home if you are sick.
  • Students may not return to school unless they have been fever free for 24 hours with NO medication.
SBHC

UNM School-Based Health Centers (SBHCs) are located at several schools around Albuquerque. SBHCs will see APS students for immunizations, medical care, case management, behavioral health, and dental care. They see ALL APS students regardless of insurance or immigration status. Appointments are recommended. Click the file to find out more information on how to contact a SBHC.

Vision

reduce eye strain

It is important to remind students to take eye breaks during virtual learning. Here are some tips!

  • Have students look away from the screen every 20 minutes and focus on an object at least 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
  • Keep student's device at least 16 inches away from their face.
  • Take a 10 minute break from devices every hour.
  • Adjust the screen brightness. Too bright will cause them to squint and too dim causes strain.
  • Remind  them to blink when they are using electronic devices. Studies show blinking slows down 5 to 10 times when looking at a screen causing dry eyes.

School Nurse

School Nurses

reporting Positive covid cases during virtual learning

Please remember to contact School Nurse or Principal if you (staff or parents) or your student are COVID positive and in isolation and/or quarantine. The reasons for this are mostly so that we can support you and make sure we coordinate contactless materials distribution (delivery by hand or by mail) so you don't have to leave isolation/quarantine to come to the drive-by pick up. This is also so that I can do frequent check-ins with you to support your family with information and resources in light of the fact that due to overwhelming numbers of cases the NM Department of Health is no longer conducting daily follow-up calls to positive cases. And finally, the other reason is that if you have been on campus during the time of your illness or two days prior to your symptoms we will need to coordinate school closure and disinfecting.

Contacting the School Nurse During COVID-19 Closure

If you need to reach the nurse during the school closure you may call 505-881-9855 ext 45013 and leave a message. Messages will be checked daily. Virtual office hours will be Monday and Wednesday from 9 am to 11 am. Call or text 505-600-1427 to speak with the nurse. You may also email me with questions at kelli.bishop@aps.edu.

If you have questions regarding COVID-19 please check the APS website and the New Mexico Department of Health website.

Daily COVID-19 symptom checklist must be completed by the parent every day prior to sending students to school.

Too Sick for School

Health office

The Hodgin health office is here to care for students who have medical conditions, injuries, or illnesses. Please let the health office know if your child has a medical condition we need to be aware of. We will do our best to ensure that your student has their medical needs met so they can get the best education possible. We perform yearly grade level vision, hearing, height, weight, and dental screenings in K and 3rd. 1st-grade students receive vision screenings.

If your child becomes sick at school the health office will call an emergency contact listed on their profile to come to pick them up. They can only be released to someone listed on their emergency contacts and that person must have a valid ID for pick up. It is very important that we have up-to-date phone numbers for you and the emergency contacts. You can update contact information in ParentVue.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding your student's health at school, please contact the nurse at 505-881-9855 ext. 45013 or via email kelli.bishop@aps.edu
